Are you struggling with plus size shopping because you are on a budget? I’ve been there before. It can be a daunting task trying to shop on a budget; however, if you go at it with a few tips then the process is a lot easier and it goes a heck of a lot smoother.
Below, you’ll find my top 10 tips that have always helped me get through budget plus size shopping. These are the tips that I used on my first shopping extravaganza and it worked like a charm. I now use these tips every single time I go shopping and I have passed them on to all my plus sized friends so that they can have a wonderful budget plus size shopping experience.
- Know What Looks Good on You: This is probably the most important rule when budget shopping. You need to be familiar with your size and your shape. You need to know the style of clothes that look the best on your body; the style of clothes that highlight the proper areas of your body and hide the problems areas.
- Outlet Malls: Yes, I said it. Outlet malls are my number one shopping place. They have designer clothing but for a fraction of the retail cost. You’ll have to sort through lots of junk, but it’s actually fun coz you never know when you’ll come across that piece of treasure…
- Shop Online: The World Wide Web is full of stores that specialize in plus
size clothing. If you are worried it will be too expensive, you can always buy clothes that are on sale. Definitely sign up for their newsletters, or visit our Sales & Discounts page to see the latest deals going on right now. In addition, there are outlet malls online just like they are offline. - Thrift/Consignment Shops: These are also great shopping location. The clothes are used, but they are usually still in good shape. However, it may be harder to find something that you want here.
- Department Store Shopping: It is okay to shop in regular department stores rather than thrift stores, consignment shops, and outlet malls. You can actually find a wide selection in some stores as well as great deals. Just be certain that the clothing fits you the way it should and it fits appropriately with your checkbook as well.
- Take Your Time: When you finally delve out into the world of shopping, be sure to take your time. Don’t waste your money purchasing clothes that you don’t actually like just because they fit. This won’t create any confidence inside yourself – trust me, I know from experience.
- Shop on Sale Days: Go shopping when you know there are going to be big sales at your favorite stores. In particularly, days such as Black Friday, the sale after Thanksgiving, is a perfect sale day.
- Coupons, Coupons, Coupons: Saving money is essential in today’s economy so when you are on a budget, the best thing to do is to print your lovely self out some coupons. Don’t be embarrassed to use them. I used to be but then I learned a secret – almost everyone uses coupons! But, hey, don’t tell anyone I told you – shhh!!

- Buy What You Need: Remember, you are shopping because you probably need some new clothes. Therefore, unless you have somewhere to wear it, don’t buy some expensive floor length dress. Stick to the basics and what you need.
- Stay Confident: Shopping can be intimidating especially when you aren’t finding the things that you need (or want) or the pieces of clothing that you try on simply don’t fit right or don’t look right. Therefore, above all else, stay confident. Keep your head up. You’ll find what it is that you are looking for – maybe today, maybe tomorrow, or maybe the next day, and maybe even at a different store but rest assured, you’ll find it.
