Yoga is a great way for a plus size woman to exercise and maintain flexibility. It’s one of the best things you can do to keep in shape and limber. It won’t make the weight drop off – for that, you’ll need more aerobic exercise. What it will do, however, is increase your confidence and give you a deeper connection to your body, which in turn could make you more comfortable with your body’s shape and/or more determined to change it.
A Few Tips for Yoga
Some women are understandably self-conscious about dressing in exercise clothes that reveal everything while in such close proximity to so many other people. If this bothers you, there are a few things you can do to mitigate this problem. One is to find a yoga class designed for plus size woman. Such classes are becoming increasingly popular, but you won’t find them everywhere, particularly if you live in a more rural area. You can use Yoga DVDs, but although effective, they don’t give you the full benefit of an in-person yoga class. You can also wear double layers to give you more cover, but this detracts from your ability to perform the exercises. In short, there’s no substitute for having the confidence to work out in whatever clothes are most comfortable on you.
Dressing for yoga is basically the same as dressing for any other type of exercise. You want comfortable clothes that wick away sweat and don’t restrict your movements. Since yoga involves your upper and lower body, it’s critical that your clothing doesn’t hold you back. This is a bit different than other forms of exercise that are repetitive and only involve your legs and limited arm movement.
Dressing Your Bottom Half for Yoga
As far as pants go, capris are great for yoga. They aren’t as revealing as other types of shorts; they don’t bunch up; and they offer you the free range of motion you need in yoga. You can find them in many varieties, fitted and unfitted. You’ll want to wear the sweat-wicking kind if you can find them. If they’re not available in plus sizes at the major retailers, you can find them in specialty stores online.
Dressing Your Top Half for Yoga
Yoga tops can vary from tanks to hoodies, but the key is flexibility. You want to wear something that doesn’t constrict your upper body within a certain range of motion. For this reason, tanks or short-sleeve t-shirts are generally best. With tops, it’s even more important that you find fabric that minimizes sweat. This rules out cotton, which absorbs sweat and won’t keep you dry. You’ll find dozens of different styles of tanks, bra tops and short-sleeve t-shirts that will suit yoga just fine. While you can attempt to layer a looser shirt over a tank, this will generally just get in your way and make the yoga exercises more difficult to perform. For this reason, it’s best to stick to tanks and wear them with confidence.
Yoga can become an integral part of a workout plan to change your body, or you can simply use it to increase your flexibility, balance and confidence. Whichever way you use it, these yoga clothing tips will help you master this rewarding activity, even if you are plus sized.
