While there are stores that do, there are still so many stores that don’t offer plus size fashion for us full figured women. When Full-Figured Fashion Week came to Manhattan a short while ago, a former 6’2” model, Gwen DeVoe, stepped out onto the runway to demonstrate the need for plus size clothing.
What many retailers don’t see is that plus size women are ready and willing to spend the money on clothing that flatters their figures, covers up their problem areas and simply makes them sexy and more appealing – other women may not be so keen on the idea right now.
Another important fact that retailers don’t consider is that the majority of the United States population is either obese or at least overweight so where does that leave clothing lines if they don’t offer plus size fashion?
NOWHERE!
Large retailers and big corporations haven’t wanted to go the plus size fashion route mainly due to cost as it’s a major issue. Plus size clothing is more difficult to make and much more expensive to make than traditional clothing sizes. Material is a huge cost when it comes to making clothing as it makes up more than half of a garment’s cost; however, plus size clothing is rising in popularity and in sales. Therefore, a lot of retailers and large companies are finally considering plus size clothing lines.
What the current fashion industry needs to do is realize where their potential is – what consumer base is more likely to purchase clothing right now over others? Plus size fashion is a huge fashion market explosion and more and more retailers are finally beginning to realize that if they want to stay alive in today’s economic slump that plus size fashion lines are the way to go.
One concept that retailers are going to have to make sure they realize is that they need to make trendy, fashionable, chic, and sassy clothing. We see more and more young people, teenagers even, overweight than we have ever before; therefore, if retailers are going to open up a market there needs to be something for everyone. This means we need to establish a cute and fun clothing line for the younger market base – younger girls don’t find plus size clothing appealing because they can’t find it “in style” or it’s absolutely appalling because it looks like something their grandmother would wear.
A couple larger corporations that have already introduced plus size clothing lines recently include Forever 21 and Target. Forever 21, out of California, just recently last year introduced their plus size line known as Faith 21. Target started carrying a trendy plus size clothing line for the younger consumer base known as Pure Energy last summer.
No matter whether you were born with the curves you have or you simply got the way you did due to depression, over-eating, or any other reason, you need to look sexy and those curves need to be dressed in stylish fashion. There are plenty of places that offer trendy plus size fashion right now and with the way it looks, there will be more stores to come very soon as retailers will use plus size fashion to jump back into the swing of things.
